20L Drum Recycling Update – Important Information for Our Customers

Ward Packaging would like to inform our customers of an important update regarding 20L chemical drum recycling.

Ward Packaging Will No Longer Collect 20L Drums

Effective immediately, Ward Packaging will no longer be collecting 20L chemical drums for recycling.

This decision has been made due to health and safety requirements, as we do not have the on-site capability to clean drums to the standard required by recycling centres.

We remain committed to responsible environmental practices and appreciate the efforts our customers make to recycle chemical containers correctly.

How to Recycle Your 20L Drums

Customers who wish to continue recycling their 20L drums are encouraged to contact their local recycling centre directly.

Please note that recycling centres will only accept drums that meet strict preparation standards.

Recycling Centre Requirements for 20L Drums

Local recycling centres will only collect 20L drums if they meet the following criteria:

  • 20L products only

  • Drums must be triple-rinsed and fully drained prior to collection

  • Rinsing should be carried out immediately after emptying, as residue becomes harder to remove once dry

  • All labels must be removed

  • All caps must be removed

  • Drums must contain no remaining chemical

Drums that do not meet these criteria will not be accepted by recycling centres.

Why Proper Cleaning Matters

Chemical residue left inside containers can pose safety risks during handling and transport. Recycling centres require drums to be thoroughly cleaned to protect workers, transport operators, and the environment.

Ensuring containers are correctly rinsed also improves the recyclability of the plastic material.

Triple Rinsing – Best Practice Guide

To meet recycling requirements, follow this triple-rinsing process:

  1. Ensure all chemical has been used and there is no product remaining in the drum.

  2. Fill the container with clean water to approximately 20–25% of its capacity and securely replace the cap.

  3. Shake, rotate, roll or invert the container vigorously for at least 30 seconds, ensuring all internal surfaces are rinsed.

  4. Pour out the rinsate and allow the container to drain for an additional 30 seconds after flow reduces to drops.

  5. Repeat this process until the container has been rinsed three times or is free of chemical residue.
